McAfee Ultimate Review
McAfee Internet Security is another popular antivirus suite from American developers. On the installation stage McAfee made so called pre-installed scan of the system for known threats to make the setup error-free. If you have another antivirus solution installed McAfee Internet Security will make a promt and suggest you remove it. Though you can skip to remove another antivirus it is highly advisable to do so as it may lead to McAfee software malfunction due to drivers incompatibility. When I tested McAfee I already had AVG Antivirus installed and hence saw the following message:

I removed AVG Antivirus and continued the installation.
McAfee Ultimate 2024 vs McAfee Total Security
The first difference referrers to the quantity of the online storage you can use to save your data, in Ultimate it is 1 Gb, in Total Security 2 Gb.
In addition to a set of antivirus, antispyware and antimalware protection, McAfee Ultimate include some new features in version 2024:
- Antibot protection. Botnet (robot and network). Most often, the bot in the botnet is a program that secretly installed on a victim's computer and allows an attacker to perform certain actions using the resources of the infected computer. Usually used for illegal or disapproved activities - spamming, password forcing on the remote system and so on.
- USB and external drive scan. How often you use USB flash or external drive to copy from on PC to another? Do you always check the source computer for viruses when you save smth. from it? That’s why checking USB flash and external drive for viruses, Trojans and malicious software is so important nowadays.
- Pre-install scan. Some people start thinking about antivirus software when their computers are already infected. When you start installing McAfee software it performs pre-install check to eliminate threats and make setup error-free.
McAfee Ultimate 2024 vs McAfee Total Security

I have found the following McAfee processes
- mfevtps.exe (5.5 Mb)
- mfefire.exe (4.5 Mb)
- mcshield.exe (6 Mb)
- mcagent.exe (600 Kb)
When McAfee is idle it uses approximately 22 Mb of memory which I suppose is more than acceptable.
Comparison of McAfee Ultimate 2024 with other Internet Security Suites
When somebody is looking for good antivirus software I believe the following factors should be considered:
- The protection level. This is the most significant value otherwise why do we need antivirus software. The reliable antivirus solution should be installed without any issues on both, healthy and already infected systems to perform the scan. To say the truth McAfee Ultimate 2024 has some issues installing to the infected system, though it performs pre-installed scan it didn’t help the software and several times I saw BSOD. In comparison with Kaspersky Internet Security 2024 and BitDefender Internet Security 2024 which also perform pre-install scan McAfee didn’t handle this task. I checked other reviews and video tutorials to be sure that I was right, even av-test.org reports shows 3.0 out of 6.0 scores for repair measure, ability to cure already infected system.
- Speed of scan. When it comes for the system scan nobody wants to wait hours or even days though a thorough analysis requires some time. From all ant viruses I tested the quickest one was Avast Internet Security 6 and most of the time took full system scan with Kaspersky Internet Security 2024, McAfee internet Security was in the middle of the list. Moreover Kaspersky Internet Security 2024 slows down the system pretty much and as a result running another applications may be quite difficult.
- Additional protection. I would recommend McAfee developers to add the following features into the future versions of the software:
- Rescue Mode Scan. The same name feature in BitDefender Internet Security 2012 is of much help in case you can’t delete some threat under Windows. You reboot the PC and run the software under Linux environment to eliminate viruses and malware. In Kaspersky Internet Security you can make rescue disc and perform the same task. - Virtual environment. As an additional protection from online thefts BitDefender Internet Security 2024 has its own virtual browser, Kaspersky Ultimate 2024 and Panda Internet Security 2024 has virtual keyboard. Isolated environment like a browser or a keyboard may help you protect your password from your credit card or login details. McAfee Ultimate doesn’t have either.
There are certainly other additional protection features I didn’t mention about but I suppose these two above are most important.

The above average antivirus suite protection which has unique features like antibot protection will make your PC safe from all known threats. The one biggest advantage of McAfee Ultimate 2024 Suite towards its competitors is the price. Though it costs $79.99 McAfee usually offers promo coupons and discounts for their software.
